Creating Positive Tension: Interview Video

This video is an excerpt from an interview conducted at the Monfort Institute, University of Northern Colorado, 2010.

Creating Organizational Change: Insights from CEOs

In this interview excerpt, the discussion centered around the importance of creating tension within an organization to drive change. Drawing parallels to Isaac Newton’s laws of motion, it was highlighted that organizations, much like physical bodies, exhibit inertia. They tend to remain in their current state unless acted upon by an external force.

Key Points Discussed

Inertia in Organizations: Organizations that are content with their current results often resist change. This inertia can only be overcome by creating a sense of dissatisfaction with the current state and presenting a compelling vision for the future.

Dissatisfaction and Vision: Two critical components for driving change are dissatisfaction with the current state and a compelling vision for the future. These elements work together to push and pull the organization towards change.

Creating Tension: CEOs in the study created a rich vision that defined the desired reality and used comprehensive scorecards to measure the current reality. The gap between these two realities created the necessary tension to drive the organization forward.

Continuous Improvement: To maintain momentum, it is essential to continually raise the bar. As the organization improves, the vision must be adjusted to keep the tension and drive ongoing progress.

Overcoming Resistance: Despite efforts to create tension and involve employees in the change process, resistance is inevitable. One CEO’s approach was to ask employees to try the new method for a year, with the assurance that they could revert to the old ways if it didn’t work.

This interview excerpt provided useful insights into the dynamics of organizational change and the strategies employed by successful CEOs to overcome inertia and drive continuous improvement.
