Description

Building on practice, case studies, and several theories, this paper presents a framework and methodology for designing management systems that create sustainable value for multiple stakeholders. This positive approach to design builds on a foundation of performance excellence concepts and principles. It integrates aspects of systems theory, design thinking, appreciative inquiry, and sustainability to design management systems that integrate the perspectives of economic, environmental, and social stakeholders.

Systems theory is integrated into the design process to facilitate the development of generative solutions that take advantage of leverage points to create value for multiple stakeholders. Design thinking is used throughout the process to reframe the issues and constraints to develop new designs that enable leaders to explore new courses of action. The design framework incorporates appreciative inquiry concepts in a positive approach to address the design challenges of systems that serve multiple stakeholders. Finally, the crosscutting concepts of sustainability are integrated across the framework, and the other concepts provide a new foundation and purpose for the design of systems that create sustainable value beyond profit.

The purpose of this presentation and paper is to provide new insights into the process and practices of management system design to help practitioners design custom leadership and management systems, as well as provide new insights for academic researchers interested in advancing the theory of management by design. Case examples such as leadership systems, employee development systems, and strategic management systems are included to illustrate key concepts related to the “art and science” of leadership and management system design.
